I was going to write a blog on mindfulness and then Hurricane Sandy hit. This natural disaster created awareness or mindfulness in me on the need for our world to shift our focus from material things to humanity, simplicity and kindness.
I was watching the news carefully when the hurricane hit the east coast. I have many friends and family in the New York and New Jersey area as well as a father on his way down to Florida by boat. Being a very spiritual person, I had faith that my father, brother, cousins, dearest friends and mother would be safe and well. I gave little thought to their stuff, because… It’s just stuff.
Seeing the homes in Riverside Heights destroyed by fire and Jersey shore under water was shocking and sad, because these were the roots planted by families and the homes were filled with memories. However, what made me smile was the humanity brought forth by this event. Neighbors we hugging each other saying they were glad no one was hurt- that they had each other. Communities spared by Sandy, such as my own, gather clothes, cleaning products, even gas to send to these people in need. Humanity and kindness surface from the destruction, reminding us what is truly important. The shift from the base, sacral and solar plexus chakras of greed, addiction, proving ourself and our determination to the heart chakra of love and commitment was starting to happen.
I do not know if any of you saw the double rainbow in the sky after the storm, but it was truly amazing. I’ll post a picture my husband took. It was a message, in my opinion. We can find light through all of the destruction and live each day to the fullest with compassion, humanity and simplicity moving forward, or we can stay chasing our tails, accumulating “things” thinking it gives us value and importance, covet what others have, compete and be envious, gluttonous and judgmental and live in a state of sadness, restlessness and negativity. I choose the light and positivity. It is time to shift my friends. What do you choose?
